Anthesis has conducted the research, and created and delivered a brief for WWF International outlining the compatibility between nature transition planning and the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD).

WWF International commissioned Anthesis to support in writing the brief, outlining achievable steps for delivering a nature-positive world. Following the historic Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) being signed by 200 governments in 2022, which aims to halt and reverse biodiversity loss, preparations for fulfilling commitments are underway, with countries identifying how to implement the targets. To date, available frameworks and guidance focus largely on climate. To meet the goals of the Kunming-Montreal GBF, transition plans will need to cover nature explicitly.

Nature as a theme for business is progressing quickly. Target 15 of the Global Biodiversity Framework, agreed upon last year, asks for disclosure of impacts, dependencies and risks related to nature. The TNFD framework, published in September 2023, provides guidance for companies and financial institutions to understand and disclose on these but raises questions of how we transition to a nature-positive world and how we plan for that transition.

This brief argues for more explicit coverage of transition planning in nature-related disclosures while also indicating what parts of the transition planning architecture are already present in the TNFD framework. Actionable, achievable steps are needed for companies, governments, and organisations to understand and achieve targets if we are to secure a nature-positive world and contribute to the globally agreed 1.5°C temperature goal.

This brief addresses the need for explicit coverage of transition planning in nature-related disclosures, and lays out, on a high level:

  • How the TNFD framework already encompasses parts of the transition planning architecture.
  • What gaps still exist for disclosure entities, framework developers and standard setters.
  • Where to get started in addressing existing gaps.
