Hughes Energy Group (HEG) is pioneering a low-carbon fiber production method called the Wilson System® that converts organic municipal solid waste (MSW) sources (including food, paper, etc.) into useable fiber for corrugated products, enabling a new recycling system for organic waste.
HEG turned to Anthesis for a robust analysis of the environmental impacts of the Wilson System® in comparison to impacts from the disposal of organic waste in a landfill.
To develop their internal capacity to conduct their own LCAs in the future, and to ensure HEG’s executive team was empowered to fully exploit learnings from LCAs, HEG requested training in LCA fundamentals, the ISO standard, and modeling using SimaPro.
Anthesis worked with HEG to develop a model of a full-scale Wilson System® based on lab-scale, experimental data. We then conducted an ISO-compliant comparative LCA that assessed environmental impacts from cradle to grave for 10 environmental indicators.
Anthesis determined that HEG’s Wilson System® reduces global warming impacts by 526 kg CO2eq. per ton of organic MSW as compared to disposal in a landfill. HEG’s yearly production of containerboard (50% Wilson fiber, 50% old corrugated containers) diverts 175,000 tons MSW from landfills and saves 66,582 tons CO2eq. (100yr GWP).
Anthesis provided eight 75-min educational sessions to empower HEG with the knowledge it needs to leverage LCA as a guide in its strategic decision making, in its marketing efforts, and in future research and development activities.

HEG is leveraging data from this project in their marketing efforts to demonstrate the climate benefits of their innovative product.
With the knowledge HEG acquired through training provided by Anthesis, HEG now conducts LCAs independently.
Survey feedback about the training indicated 100% of attendees were either “Very” or “Extremely” satisfied, with over 70% indicating “Strong” agreement that the LCA workshops were an “interesting learning experience” and 85% saying they’d recommend the course to others.
