Home – Case Studies – Developing Research for the British International Investment Emerging Economies Climate Report
The Situation
Anthesis is proud to have assisted British International Investment (BII) with its 2023 Emerging Economies Climate Report.
The report looks at how the climate crisis affects businesses in emerging economies to raise awareness of the impacts of climate change now and in the future, and the investment needed to support these businesses.
Our Solutions
On behalf of BII, Anthesis surveyed senior representatives from across BII’s portfolio in Africa and Asia to understand how the climate crisis is affecting them and how businesses are positioned to respond to the global net zero transition.
To take a deeper dive into understanding what climate risk adaptation and mitigation looks like in these regions, Anthesis also undertook several interviews with survey participants.
Anthesis designed the survey in line with key elements of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), an international framework to help businesses disclose climate-related risks and opportunities. Anthesis then analysed this research, making comparisons against our research from the previous year, and developed the report.

Impacts of the Project
Key findings from the report
- 79% of businesses said climate change is impacting their organisation today, up from 68% in 2022.
- 59% said extreme climate events have impacted their firm. Flooding, drought and extreme heat are the top physical climate risks.
- 97% agreed that organisations that take steps to reduce carbon emissions and vulnerability to physical climate change risks will be more successful in the long term – up from 91% in 2022.
- Encouragingly, firms are building skills and approaches to tackle and respond to climate change. Most respondents (65%) have adapted their business strategy in response to climate change. And more respondents (45%) are calculating their carbon footprint, up from 38% in 2022.
- Yet there’s much more work to be done. Businesses have fundamental concerns about climate change but most are not yet financially planning in response. In many cases, this is because they lack the necessary knowledge and resources.
- There is an opportunity for investors of all types to step up their support.
