Home – Case Studies – Collaborating on the Updated 2024 SBTN Guidance
The Situation
The Science-Based Targets Network (SBTN) was looking to revise its technical guidance for setting corporate nature targets. SBTN chose Anthesis to act as lead facilitator of a working group aimed at providing improved technical guidance to support companies in estimating nature-related impacts of key commodities.
Following an informative pilot program, the Science-Based Targets Network (SBTN) has unveiled its 2024 updated technical guidance for setting corporate nature targets. The revised guidance and enabling materials enhance the methodology for land and freshwater targets.
In preparation for this important update, SBTN chose Anthesis to act as lead facilitator of an expert working group focused on addressing guidance related to Upstream Target Boundary B., part of Step 2: Interpret & Prioritize.
Our Solutions
In order to set Science-Based Targets for Nature, it is critical for companies to understand where and how their supply chain interfaces with nature. Unfortunately, gathering the information needed to make these assessments has proven difficult for many companies. Thus, SBTN’s collaboration with Anthesis served to offer improved technical guidance that would support companies in better estimating the impacts of key commodities on nature.
In this lead facilitator role, Anthesis experts organized and guided working group sessions to develop an outline of the revised guidance and a proposal of supporting tools and resources. They also identified gaps and opportunities that could be leveraged to better support companies in collecting supplier data. Through an iterative review process, the working group then drafted the final guidance to be included in the update.
Anthesis is a proud delivery partner for the SBTN, and our team is thrilled to have contributed to the development of these new guidance materials. We are here to support clients in navigating SBTN’s target-setting procedures.
What are Science-Based Targets for Nature?
Science-based targets for nature (SBTs) are measurable, actionable, and time-bound goals that ambitious companies set to align business activities with our planetary boundaries and sustainability objectives. Companies that wish to drive action for nature and optimize their value chains are encouraged to apply the guidance and resources developed by the SBTN to assess and prioritize impacts on freshwater, land, ocean, and biodiversity so that they may set valuable nature targets.
