The Efficient Cookstoves Project in Uganda addresses critical health, environmental, and social challenges by promoting access to cleaner and more efficient cooking technologies. This initiative reduces harmful indoor air pollution, combats deforestation, and empowers local communities, particularly women and children, by alleviating the burden of fuel collection.
Location:
Uganda
Project Type:
Cookstoves
Across Uganda, many households rely on open fires for cooking, which produce large amounts of harmful smoke. This indoor air pollution poses significant health risks, causing millions of premature deaths annually—more than the combined toll of tuberculosis, malaria, and AIDS. Women and children, who are typically responsible for meal preparation and fuel collection, face the brunt of these health risks and spend countless hours gathering firewood.
This project provides access to locally manufactured, cleaner, and more efficient cookstoves, which use 50% less firewood than traditional stoves. These innovative stoves not only reduce harmful smoke emissions but also alleviate the pressure on Uganda’s forests, combating deforestation and contributing to climate change mitigation.
Anthesis collaborates with local organisations to support the manufacturing, distribution, and sales of efficient cookstoves. By purchasing carbon credits, Anthesis helps ensure that these improved stoves are widely accessible to Ugandan households, delivering measurable health, environmental, and social benefits.
This initiative is certified under the Gold Standard, guaranteeing rigorous monitoring, reporting, and verification of its impacts. As a member of the International Carbon Reduction and Offset Alliance (ICROA), Anthesis ensures its projects meet the highest standards for reliability and climate compensation.
The project adheres to Gold Standard certification, ensuring effective reductions in emissions and improved social outcomes.
