Safeguard Mechanism
Our multidisciplinary team of experts has been trusted to deliver trusted and quality advice and guidance on the Safeguard Mechanism for many of Australia’s largest emitters and project developers. The team collectively has around 30 years’ experience within industry and as external advisors specialising in this space. We assist reporting entities to understand their legislative obligations, reduce emissions and augment their strategic decision-making. We excel at navigating technically and legislatively complex problems, to ensure our clients are better informed and better prepared for the deep decarbonisation required to achieve Australia’s net zero future.
Our team are highly experienced with the Safeguard Mechanism, NGERs, the Emissions Reduction Fund, and industrial decarbonisation and strategy, with decades of experience working with some of Australia’s largest emitting companies to achieve not only compliance but efficiencies, cost savings and deep emissions reduction.
NGERs
NGERs or the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting scheme, is Australia’s national legislative framework for reporting and publishing company information about greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, energy production and energy consumption. It is administered by the Clean Energy Regulator (CER) who register and deregister corporations for reporting, receive reports submitted through the Emissions and Energy Reporting System (EERS) and who enforce compliance of the Act. Who needs to report to NGERs is determined by specific emissions thresholds. These are classed as the Facility threshold and the Corporate Group threshold.
Our team collectively has over 30 years’ experience within industry and as external advisors specialising in this space. We are registered auditors under the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act 2007 and provide assurance in compliance with the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting framework that covers both NGERs and Safeguard Mechanism liable entities.
Mandatory Climate-related Disclosures
The Australian Government is introducing Australian Sustainability Reporting Standards (ASRS) to enhance transparency and accountability among large businesses and financial institutions regarding their climate-related plans, risks, and opportunities. These standardised, internationally aligned (to ISSB) reporting requirements, will cover
governance, strategy, risk management, targets, metrics, and greenhouse gas disclosures.
We’re able to assist your business successfully navigate climate risk reporting including:
- Climate-related financial disclosure saligned with ASRS, ISSB and TCFD standards.
- Developing strategies for climate mitigation and adaptation, and establishing metrics and targets.
- Qualitative and quantitative scenario analysis to assess financial impacts of climate-related risks and opportunities.
- Full value chain GHG accounting based on GHG Protocol and financed emissions measurement using PCAF framework.
- Advising and reporting on nature-related risk and opportunities to TNFD.
- Seeking out opportunities for efficiencies, innovation, long-term resilience building and driving sustainable performance.
PCAF Standard
Banks and financial institutions worldwide play a crucial role in facilitating the transition to a decarbonized world. The Partnership for Carbon Accounting Financials – PCAF Standard – guides entities in assessing and disclosing their financed emissions, fostering a deeper understanding of their emissions profiles and identifying pathways to reduce them.
Accoding to the PCAF Standard, emissions are attributed to financial institutions based on robust, consistent accounting rules specific to each asset class. By following the methodologies for each, financial institutions can measure GHG emissions for each asset class and produce disclosures that are consistent, comparable, reliable, and clear.
