We are thrilled to announce the second issuance of carbon credits from the ‘Zaidi Bomba Maji Arusha’ Safe Water Project in Tanzania, a Gold Standard-certified initiative. This milestone marks the avoidance of an additional 15,320 equivalent tons of CO₂ emissions, contributing significantly to the fight against climate change and the improvement of community health and empowerment.
The VEI Safe Water Project
This Gold Standard project is initiated by VEI, a Dutch NGO and the world’s leading water operator. Currently, the project supplies over 2500 households, with access to safe drinking water. Charcoal, gas and especially firewood is used in many Tanzanian households to boil water in order to treat it. This not only depletes forest resources but also contributes to the emission of greenhouse gases. This project has built new water connections for households in the city of Arusha, and linking them to the main water distribution network. Residents now have access to safe water, thus using less fuel for boiling water.
Anthesis as carbon project developer
In this project Anthesis functions as a carbon project developer, meaning we quantify and verify the emission reductions resulting from the project, in collaboration with VEI and in line with the Gold Standard methodology. This ensures that the carbon credits produced are of high-quality and meet the highest standards for sustainability, environmental integrity, and social impact.
Beyond Carbon: A Holistic Approach to Sustainability
The VEI Safe Water Project delivers far-reaching benefits beyond its climate impact. Safe drinking water drastically improves public health by reducing waterborne diseases, while simultaneously saving time and labour that would otherwise be spent collecting and burning wood. Women, in particular, benefit as they often bear the burden of these tasks.
By being certified under the Gold Standard, the project ensures that it provides tangible social and environmental co-benefits in alignment with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These include SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
A Global Commitment to a Sustainable Future
The issuance of 15,320 tons of CO₂ credits in this second round showcases the significant impact the VEI Safe Water Project is making. The second issuance of credits from this project is a testament to the project’s long-term impact. It represents a critical step in mitigating climate change while supporting local communities in Tanzania. As we celebrate this achievement, we remain committed to promoting and expanding projects that blend environmental sustainability with community resilience.
